There's nothing I love more than talking about Pilates. I love sharing the story of Joseph Pilates and my passion for the work. I love teaching people things they didn't know about their own bodies or movement patterns. That said, if I had a dollar for every person who asked me "What is Pilates good for?"... well, let's just say I could retire comfortably sometime in the next few months.
As it turns out, Pilates is good for pretty much every body at pretty much every level of fitness. What is Pilates good for? Coordination:
Believe it or not, you weren't born a klutz. If you tend to trip on your own shoelaces or fall out of your seat from time to time, Pilates can help you with balance, gross motor skills, posture and alignment, gait and mindfulness. There's even a reformer exercise called Coordination. Don't worry, though... you'll have it mastered in no time.
What is Pilates good for? Balance:
Pilates helps develop and recruit the smaller muscle groups closer to the skeleton, while helping to relieve the demand on your larger muscles groups. Building more efficient muscle recruitment not only helps you stand up straighter and more confidently, but it also helps you balance the load on your muscles, bones and joints. What is Pilates good for? Pain: That dull ache in your low back. The never-ending tension in your neck and shoulders. The tightness you feel in your hamstrings when you bend over to tie your shoe. Tired and sore feet. Tennis elbow. IT band dysfunction. You might find temporary relief with over-the-counter pain relievers, massage, or chiropractic adjustments.
Pilates teaches you how to use your body more effectively and efficiently. It helps build the strength you need to support your body in a more balanced way, which can have lasting effects on your ability to manage your pain. The best part is that it works whether you're a sedentary person, a professional athlete, or something in between.
What is Pilates good for? Cross training and athletic conditioning: Want to run a marathon? Move up the leaderboard on your Peloton? Get back to step aerobics? (People aren't actually getting back to step aerobics, are they?) Chase your grandkids around until they're exhausted? Do the things you love better, faster, longer or stronger than you're currently doing them? Pilates is an effective system for helping you develop deep strength and flexibility to assist in your athletic pursuits. It's the ultimate performance enhancer.
What is Pilates good for? Flexibility: Friends always tell me they want to take classes with me, but they're not flexible enough to start Pilates yet. I always respond that flexibility training is the only way to get more flexible. If you can't touch your toes, the spring-loaded apparatus in a Pilates studio is specifically designed to help you safely maneuver your joints while building long, lean musculature.
If you're on the opposite end of the spectrum, working on the apparatus is excellent for teaching extremely flexible or hyper-mobile bodies how to support themselves to reduce the risk of pain and injury. The work will meet you where you are.
